Alternate livelihood - Handicrafts

The I-community is also keen to preserve local culture and tradition. As an example, HP has identified a trainer who is currently working with women from the sugali tribe, a nomadic community. The trainer is helping in reviving the art of traditional bead and wire jewellery. HP is also enabling this community to gain access to new markets to sell their handicraft by providing them access to e-markets.

The handicrafts training to a group of tribal women is a means to build capacity and create new sustainable livelihoods. The women come from a remote village called PM Thanda and belong to the Sugali tribe. Sugali women traditionally used a variety of beadwork for their daily wear; however this craft had died out over time. This initiative attempts to revive their skills and trains them in traditional Indian glass beadwork. The designs however, have been modified to suit the tastes of contemporary markets.

Over time, HP would like to work with the women to transform this initiative into a self-managed, self-sustaining business enterprise. The handicrafts made from this project are on sale in India’s leading e-marketplace www.sifymall.com thereby integrating ICT in this initiative.
